Riding the Causeway.
“Fertile land, sloping to the water.”
There’s a bit of conjecture about this, but historians tell us that was the Native American term for Manahawkin.
It later became a stop off on the railroad to Tuckerton, which connected to Beach Haven by Ferry. But in 1914, an improved causeway was built connecting the mainland to Long Beach Island, making Manahawkin a vital part of the region. Basic summer dwellings were built for fishing, hunting, and heading to the beach. It’s now the largest lagoon community in the state.
A local watering hole on Bay Ave. was named The “Old” Causeway Inn for the former span when the new one was built in 1957. It was a favorite of blue collar families who came to visit, as well as those who worked and played on the bay year-round. Sadly, it was lost to a fire in the 80s.
Some fifteen years after we established Mud City Crab House, we opened The Old Causeway next door, in the same spirt as its namesake, a place to enjoy fantastic local seafood after a summer day on the beach or an amazing wood fired steaks during a snowstorm.
And our bridge is still the only way to LBI unless you’re a captain or a good swimmer.

We believe that good food should be complimented with good company and good drink. We want you to find respite in our bar top after a long day, whether you work in an office or on a crab boat. We offer a new creative cocktail menu each season as well as standard favorites, 20 beers on tap and a fine selection of wines. Our Happy Hour is seven days a week from 3-6.
Weekends are for blowing off steam. Friday and Saturday nights, we host live entertainment. We have mellow music on Monday nights and acoustic happy hour through the summer. You can find our entertainment schedule on our social media.
